"Most of my dreams are really violent. But then, obviously, my life is pretty crazy. So I have those kinds of dreams, where people are chasing me or I'm naked - you know, exposed. Also I dream of children a lot. Specifically, I see different people in my life as children. That maybe because, in a way, I feel I take care of a lot of people. But yes, dreams, are an important part of my life".

"Baby" dream of Madonna

"I am in the doctor's office. The doctor says "The heart beat of your fetus is very weak. I'd like to do an ultrasound examination of it." Once she is done with the exam the doctor announces to me - "Your baby is dead. You didn't have enough rest, so it's dead." I am seeing the baby detaching from placenta floating in my belly. Hysterical, I am breaking into tears, screaming "My God, I killed my baby. I killed my baby!"

The interpretation

1996. Madonna is pregnant with her first child Lourdes Maria. This dream or rather nightmare of the singer bears the traces of any woman's worries about her first unborn child. This dream is about motherhood. But for Madonna motherhood is more than just about giving birth.

1996. Evita. Pregnant Madonna is filming Evita. In an interview to Mim Udovitch in January 1997 Madonna recollects "When I was cast in the movie, I was psyched to play the part." Anyone would be. Madonna was only one of the actresses who were tried for it. But it was she who wanted it the most. She wanted it badly. Madonna strongly related to the story of Argentina's legendary first Lady Eva Peron. In order to get the part Madonna wrote a big personal letter to Alan Parker, the director, explaining her interest. It worked. One more time she got what she wanted.

"I know how much heart she risked in this projects" says Antonio Banderas who plays Che. But pregnant Madonna is now risking not one but two hearts - hers and of her unborn daughter. Madonna works hard on the movie, and records a soundtrack.

Why does motherhood have a special significance to Madonna?

In the same interview to Mim Udovitch Madonna confesses - "I think it would be a very healing experience because I didn't grow up with a mother and I envision hugging and tactile pleasure and the happiness of that. And I think how amazing to have someone in my life who's a part of me in a way that no one else can be, no matter how much you love them. There's also the feeling of responsibility that's different from any other love". Madonna cherishes the idea of becoming a mother because through the birth of her daughter life would make a full circle.

Usually "immune" to the press, Madonna gets very upset about something that appeared in the media that year. The singer recalls -"One thing I read that really, really, really irked me, where I did have to take a couple of deep breaths, was a little blurb during that minute there when everybody was making a big deal about the Clintons and their maybe wanting to adopt a baby. It said something like: "Hillary wants to adopt a baby; Madonna has one available." You know implying that I was completely and utterly disconnected from my pregnancy and could care less about my baby. I really got upset."

This little blurb in the press that got Madonna so upset was an expression of some people's sentiment about pregnant Madonna. For a lot of them, pregnancy was just another marketing trick. But apparently, Madonna didn't share the sentiment at all. Madonna got upset because she cared a lot about her baby. That's why the idea of losing her baby was a scary one. Materialized in the dream, this anxiety is represented by the dead fetus detaching itself from placenta.

An internationally recognized dream expert Lauren Lawrence says that in this particular dream "the detachment theme is multi-faceted. Of course, on one level Madonna was detached from her mother so there is a repetition of that early traumatic detachment. In this view, the dead baby, once again, is Madonna, for that death marked the end of her childhood."

In the dream Madonna's own fear to lose her unborn baby gives way to a flood of emotions in the doctor's office. But has anyone seen a hysterical screaming and crying Madonna yet? That doesn't seem like her style. But this outburst of emotions is a proof that Madonna is a vulnerable human being like anyone else. And it is dreams that hold this well-hidden from the public secret about the "material" girl. Amen...
